The Chinese markets saw a broad rally, driving major indices to new historic highs and signaling a clear improvement in risk appetite at the start of 2026.
On the mainland, the Shanghai Composite Index rose to 4,048 points, its highest since July 2015. Over the past four weeks, the index gained 3.14% and posted a 25.32% year-on-year increase. Similarly, the CSI 300 Index - which tracks the largest companies listed in Shanghai and Shenzhen - climbed to 4,764 points, the highest since January 2022, with a 3.04% gain in four weeks and a 26.35% annual rise.
The momentum spilled into Hong Kong's market, where the main index jumped by about 365 points or 1.4% to reach 26,714 points, its highest in over seven weeks. The performance was supported by Wall Street gains, especially in the financial sector, and continued strength in mainland markets after the Shanghai Composite broke through the 4,000-point mark in the year's first sessions.
Sentiment was further boosted by AI-related inflows, with prominent Hong Kong stocks such as Kuaishou Tech up 3.1%, Trip.com up 2.3%, Meituan up 1.4%, and SMIC up 2.0%.
Meanwhile, caution prevails ahead of the upcoming inflation and producer price data in China. November's reading showed annual inflation rising to 0.7% - the highest in 21 months - while producer prices continued to contract for the 38th consecutive month.
EcoPulse24 Analysis
The simultaneous advances of the Shanghai, CSI 300, and Hong Kong indices reflect a rare alignment between domestic momentum and foreign inflows, with a clear focus on the AI narrative. However, the sustainability of this rally will depend on upcoming price signals; inflation and production data could reshape economic policy expectations and determine whether current highs mark a new launch point or a profit-taking opportunity.
