The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development has unveiled the 'Abu Dhabi Global Water Platform,' a strategic initiative designed to finance high-impact development and investment projects in the global water sector, targeting a total of $2 billion. The Fund plans an initial injection of $1 billion over five years (2026–2030), with the remainder to be sourced through partnerships with local and international financial institutions. The platform aims to reach around 10 million beneficiaries worldwide.

Its objectives include bolstering water and food security in developing countries, expanding access to safe and clean water, funding innovative technologies in water management, and fostering international partnerships to enhance co-financing and environmental sustainability. The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 for clean water and sanitation, addressing rising global challenges of water scarcity and climate change.

Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, emphasized that the platform is part of the Fund’s 2030 strategy, focusing on globally prioritized sectors. He highlighted water as a critical factor for societal stability and quality of life. The Fund is inviting local and international partners to participate through joint financing, strategic partnerships, and knowledge exchange, aiming to accelerate the adoption of innovative solutions and strengthen countries' abilities to tackle future challenges.

Fatima Ateij Al Mazrouei, Executive Director of the Abu Dhabi Global Water Platform, noted that the launch is based on strategic studies and international benchmarks revealing significant financing gaps in the water sector. She stressed that international collaboration is key to ensuring the sustainability of this vital resource. Upcoming phases will involve signing cooperation agreements to implement development and investment projects, fund innovative initiatives, support scientific research, and run awareness programs on water issues.

EcoPulse24 Analysis | Why is the Platform a Strategic Move?

The launch of the Abu Dhabi Global Water Platform marks a qualitative shift in the UAE’s development financing approach - from supporting traditional projects to building multi-instrument financing platforms targeting structural global issues like water. The initiative not only provides funding but also aims to:
- Stimulate private investment in a traditionally high-risk, low-attractiveness sector
- Integrate technology and innovation into water solutions
- Enhance the UAE’s development influence through sustainable economic tools

Amid growing global pressure on water resources, the platform positions Abu Dhabi as a key development actor, coordinating long-term international partnerships in one of the most sensitive sectors for emerging economies.
