French postal service La Poste has experienced widespread disruptions following a suspected cyberattack targeting its network systems, resulting in delayed parcel deliveries and outages in some electronic payment services at a critical time during the holiday season peak.
In an official statement, the company described the event as a 'major network incident' affecting information systems, including those linked to its banking subsidiary La Banque Postale. The official website, laposte.fr, was temporarily rendered inaccessible, and some post office branches may also have been affected on the ground.
French media reports attribute the outage to a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, a cyberattack method that overwhelms servers with massive traffic to disrupt and disable services.
This incident comes as La Poste was preparing for unprecedented parcel shipping volumes, having previously announced it expected to handle nearly 180 million parcels during November and December, heightening the impact of any technical disruption during this period.
No further immediate comment was issued by the company regarding the extent of the damage or the expected timeline for service restoration. The event highlights the growing cyber risks faced by critical infrastructure across Europe.
It is noteworthy that postal services have previously been the target of similar cyberattacks, most notably in 2023 when a ransomware attack crippled the UK’s Royal Mail, causing widespread disruption to international parcel shipments.
