France's annual inflation rate slowed more than expected in June 2026, easing to 1.8% from 2.4% in May as energy price pressures moderated and inflation softened across several major consumer categories, according to preliminary estimates.

The reading came in below market expectations of 2.1%, signaling continued progress in the normalization of consumer prices across the euro area's second-largest economy.

The decline was primarily driven by slower increases in energy prices, while services and food inflation also eased. Prices for manufactured goods continued to decline, helped partly by seasonal discounting.

Energy Inflation Moderates Sharply

Energy remained the largest contributor to inflation, although price growth slowed considerably during the month.

Annual energy inflation eased to 11.2% from 16.6% in May, mainly reflecting a moderation in petroleum product prices.

Despite the slowdown, energy prices remained significantly above year-earlier levels.

Food and Services Inflation Continue to Ease

Inflationary pressures also softened across other major spending categories.

Services inflation slowed to 1.8%, down from 2.1%, while food inflation eased to 0.9% from 1.1%.

Meanwhile, prices for manufactured goods declined 0.9% year-on-year, compared with a 0.6% decline in May.

France's statistics agency attributed part of the larger decline to calendar effects, as this year's June data collection captured more days of seasonal retail sales than the same period last year.

Tobacco remained the only major category to record slightly faster inflation, rising 3.3% compared with 3.2% previously.

Monthly Prices Decline

On a monthly basis, France's Consumer Price Index fell 0.2%, marking the first monthly decline in five months.

The drop was driven mainly by lower energy prices, particularly petroleum products.

The EU-harmonized inflation measure also showed a marked slowdown.

Annual HICP inflation eased to 2.0% from 2.8%, while monthly harmonized prices declined 0.3%.

EcoPulse24 Analysis

France's June inflation report reinforces the broader disinflation trend emerging across the euro area.

The decline to 1.8%, below economists' expectations, suggests that earlier energy-driven price pressures continue to fade, allowing headline inflation to move closer to the European Central Bank's medium-term target.

While energy prices remain elevated compared with a year ago, the sharp slowdown in their rate of increase indicates that the inflation shock generated by previous commodity price spikes is gradually unwinding.

The easing in services and food inflation is equally significant because these categories are often viewed as more persistent indicators of underlying price pressures. Their moderation suggests that inflation is becoming less broad-based across the French economy.

The monthly decline in consumer prices - the first in five months - provides additional evidence that pricing momentum is weakening. Nevertheless, policymakers are likely to remain cautious, as energy prices continue to be influenced by geopolitical developments and global commodity markets.

For financial markets, the weaker-than-expected inflation reading may strengthen expectations that the European Central Bank will have greater room to continue normalizing monetary policy should inflation continue to moderate across the euro area in the coming months.
