Japan recorded a significantly wider-than-expected trade deficit in June as record imports outpaced robust export growth, highlighting the impact of stronger domestic demand and rising energy purchases despite continued resilience in overseas shipments.

Official data released Wednesday showed Japan's trade balance posted a deficit of JPY 406.9 billion in June, reversing from a JPY 122.3 billion surplus recorded in the same month last year. The shortfall was substantially larger than economists' expectations for a JPY 120 billion deficit and marked the second consecutive monthly trade deficit.

Record Imports Drive the Trade Gap

Imports surged 25.4% year-on-year to a record JPY 11,335.9 billion, accelerating sharply from May's 12.5% increase and exceeding market expectations for 21.0% growth.

The increase represented the strongest annual rise since November 2022, reflecting resilient domestic demand supported by the Japanese government's stimulus measures introduced in late 2025.

A major contributor was energy imports, with crude oil purchases jumping 59.3% as Japan continued diversifying its energy procurement away from the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing regional tensions.

Exports Remain Resilient

Despite the widening trade deficit, exports continued to show solid momentum.

Outbound shipments climbed 19.3% year-on-year to JPY 10,929.0 billion, reaching a three-month high and recording the strongest annual increase since November 2022.

The figure also exceeded market expectations for an 18.6% increase and marked the tenth consecutive month of export growth.

A weaker yen continued to enhance the competitiveness of Japanese goods overseas, while strong global demand for AI-related semiconductors helped support export performance despite supply chain disruptions linked to the conflict involving Iran.

Domestic Demand Outpaces External Strength

Although exports remained robust, the faster pace of import growth underscored the strength of domestic demand and the growing cost of securing energy supplies during a period of geopolitical uncertainty.

The data suggest that higher import volumes - particularly for crude oil - more than offset the benefits of stronger manufacturing exports.

EcoPulse24 Analysis

Japan's latest trade report illustrates that a widening trade deficit does not necessarily signal weakening external demand. In June, both imports and exports expanded at their fastest pace in more than two years, but imports grew even faster, driven by a combination of stronger domestic consumption and elevated energy purchases.

The sharp rise in crude oil imports also reflects how geopolitical developments continue to influence trade flows. Rather than relying heavily on supplies passing through the Strait of Hormuz, Japan has increasingly diversified its energy sourcing, a strategy that appears to have increased import values during the period.

Meanwhile, export performance continues to benefit from two structural tailwinds: the competitive advantage created by a weaker yen and sustained global investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure, which is supporting demand for Japanese semiconductor-related products.

Going forward, investors will likely monitor whether import growth begins to moderate as stimulus effects fade and energy markets stabilize, while assessing whether AI-driven export demand remains strong enough to offset external uncertainties.
