American billionaire MacKenzie Scott, former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, announced donations of $7.2 billion in her latest charitable campaign, the largest in a single year, raising her total contributions to $26 billion over the past five years, according to Bloomberg.
These new donations support over 2,700 nonprofit organizations since she began her philanthropic efforts several years ago, focusing on significant grants to small or overlooked organizations. In this latest round, Scott distributed funds to 186 organizations worldwide, including universities, environmental groups, and equality advocacy organizations.Scott's donation philosophy is characterized by imposing limited conditions on recipients, allowing them to allocate funds as they see fit, distinguishing her approach from other billionaires who often impose restrictions.
Key recipients include the organization "Camfed International" (Campaign for Girls' Education), which supports girls' education in rural Africa and has received over $105 million from Scott through multiple payments (2020, 2023, 2024, and the latest). Other recurring organizations benefiting include "Upstream USA" (healthcare), "Blue Meridian Partners" (social mobility), and "Restore Local" (land restoration).Scott's net worth is approximately $40 billion, primarily derived from her stake in Amazon, although she reduced her holdings by $12.6 billion earlier in 2025.
In her announcement this year, Scott referenced a prophecy from senior Ho-Chunk elders, stating: "It encourages us to recognize and celebrate our role as active participants in recreating our communities."Thanks to this approach, Scott has become one of the most significant donors in history, influencing the global nonprofit sector through her unrestricted donations, supporting resource-limited groups, and promoting innovation and efficiency in social and environmental fields.
