Rising Electricity Bills Threaten U.S. Gasoline Savings Amid AI Data Center Expansion
Falling US gas prices are offset by rising electricity bills, driven by AI data centers, straining budgets ahead of elections.

According to Bloomberg, American consumers are enjoying a relief from falling gasoline prices, which have reached their lowest levels in nearly five years. However, this benefit is quickly being eroded by a sharp increase in electricity bills, adding new pressure to household budgets in a politically charged election year.
Fuel prices have declined in recent months alongside a drop in oil prices since mid-2024, giving households some limited respite. Yet, electricity prices have continued to climb at a pace outstripping overall inflation, causing utility bills to consume a larger share of family spending, according to official U.S. data.
A significant portion of this increase is tied to the rapid expansion of large-scale data centers built to power artificial intelligence projects, facilities that consume massive amounts of energy. These investments are part of President Donald Trump's administration's push to support AI, but they carry political risks as voters grow frustrated with rising electricity costs.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration projects that average residential electricity prices will rise by over 4% in 2026, following an increase of nearly 5% last year. At a recent energy conference, Goldman Sachs analysts warned that electricity bills are set to become a central issue in upcoming local elections, with the U.S. power grid expected to reach a critical pressure point by 2030 due to surging demand from data centers.
Samantha Dart, Co-Head of Global Commodities Research at Goldman Sachs, noted that the core problem is the United States "is not adding enough production capacity" to keep up with rapidly rising demand.
This situation presents a delicate political balance: while falling gasoline prices may give the Republican Party some momentum, persistently high electricity bills could undermine that advantage, especially as debate intensifies over the consumer costs of digital transformation and artificial intelligence.
