Trump's $2,000 Tariff Dividend Payments Remain a Priority, Says White House
Trump still prioritizes $2,000 tariff dividend checks for Americans, but details and feasibility remain unclear, White House says.
According to Yahoo Finance post today, President Donald Trump continues to express his commitment to distributing a $2,000 dividend check to every American, funded by tariff revenues, as stated by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Wednesday.
Leavitt mentioned that White House officials are considering various methods to implement this plan, which Trump proposed in a recent social media post. However, she did not provide specific details regarding potential options.
"The president made it clear he wants to make it happen," Leavitt said during a press briefing. "So his team of economic advisers are looking into it."
This firm stance from the White House comes shortly after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed doubts about the proposal, suggesting that the payout might simply relate to tax savings outlined in Trump's earlier legislation, referred to as the One Big Beautiful Bill.
Bessent indicated that a tariff dividend could take various forms, including tax decreases that align with Trump's agenda, such as no taxes on tips, overtime, or Social Security, and deductions on auto loans. He noted that he had not discussed the proposal directly with Trump.
Some economists have questioned the practicality of achieving such dividends given the current tariff revenues.
