U.S. labor market data for December 2025 showed a slowdown in hiring, with the economy adding just 50,000 jobs - below both the downwardly revised November figure of 56,000 and market expectations of 60,000. The report also featured negative revisions for prior months, reinforcing a picture of caution in the labor market at year-end.

By sector, job growth continued in food services and drinking places (+27,000), healthcare (+21,000), and social assistance (+17,000). In contrast, retail trade lost 25,000 jobs, while federal government employment was nearly unchanged in December.

Broader industry groups such as mining and extraction, construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, transportation and warehousing, information, financial activities, professional and business services, and other services showed little monthly change.

Regarding revisions, October job gains were lowered by 68,000 to –173,000, and November's figure was revised down by 8,000 to +56,000. This means total employment gains for October and November are now 76,000 lower than previously reported.

Analysis:
The latest labor market reading reflects a delicate balance, with some service sectors continuing to hire while others face demand and margin pressures. Negative revisions reinforce market caution, supporting a narrative of controlled slowdown rather than a sharp reversal. The employment outlook remains dependent on whether strong sectors can offset losses and absorb potential shocks as the new year begins.
