According to Bloomberg, Qatar Airways announced today the appointment of Hamad Ali Al-Khater as the new CEO of the group, in a surprising move replacing Badr Mohammed Al-Mayer, who left the position after just two years. This reflects the company's desire to enhance its operational efficiency in the competitive aviation market. Al-Khater, who currently serves as the Chief Operating Officer at Hamad International Airport, takes the lead immediately, following a brief tenure in the group of less than two years. The appointment comes amid challenges in the global market, where Qatar Airways recorded a 15% growth in passengers in 2025, but faces pressure from competitors in the Gulf and regulatory changes. Al-Khater, who spent over eight years at Qatar Energy and has prior experience in other oil and gas companies, is expected to focus on expanding international partnerships and improving operational efficiency, especially with the international network expanding to 180 destinations. This marks the third change in senior leadership within three years, indicating Qatar’s strategy to respond quickly to economic challenges. With the company's revenue expected to reach $25 billion in the current fiscal year, Al-Khater's appointment is a step to enhance competitiveness in the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. In an official statement, the company confirmed that Al-Khater 'brings extensive operational management experience to support our long-term vision,' amid anticipation of the impact of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East on travel. Al-Khater is expected to announce new expansion plans in the first quarter of 2026, which could bolster Qatar Airways' position as one of the largest airlines in the world.
