Long-Term Agreement Strengthens Qatar's Presence in Asia, Secures LNG Supply for Japan Until Mid-Century

QatarEnergy has signed a long-term supply agreement with Japan's JERA, the country's largest power generation company, for 27 years to deliver 3 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually. This move strengthens the energy partnership between Doha and Tokyo and cements Qatar’s position as a key and reliable LNG supplier to Asia.
The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the International LNG Conference 2026 in Doha, following several months of negotiations. The deal comes at a time when the LNG market is undergoing strategic shifts, with rising global demand and a growing emphasis on stable, long-term supplies.
This contract is part of QatarEnergy’s broader approach to secure long-term agreements with major consumers, particularly in Asia, to ensure stable revenues and support production capacity expansion.
QatarEnergy CEO Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi noted that Europe’s ongoing LNG plans, alongside increasing demand from data centers and artificial intelligence applications, could lead to an LNG supply shortfall by 2030 instead of a surplus, indicating a fundamental shift in global market dynamics.
The International LNG Conference, running until February 5, serves as a key platform for the energy sector, with thousands of delegates and gas trading companies attending. The event emphasizes LNG’s role as a transitional fuel to reduce emissions and adapt to the evolving global energy mix.
EcoPulse24 Analysis
The deal with JERA reflects Qatar’s clear strategy to deepen long-term ties with Asian markets amid global energy market uncertainty. The contract provides Japan with decades-long energy security and demonstrates QatarEnergy’s ability to secure early opportunities ahead of potentially intensified competition for LNG supplies in the next decade.
