Retroactive Implementation of US Tariff Reduction Agreement with Switzerland
Switzerland's tariff reduction deal with the US, retroactive to announcement day, lowers rates from 39% to 15%, aiding its economy.
According to Bloomberg, the Swiss government announced that the agreement reached last month with the United States to reduce tariffs will be applied retroactively from the day it was announced, marking a significant victory for the Swiss economy, which has been severely affected by high US tariffs.
The agreement calls for a reduction of tariffs from 39% to 15%, the highest level imposed on a developed country, effective from November 14, as stated in a release on Wednesday.
In exchange, Switzerland will lower tariffs on US imports including fish, seafood, and some agricultural products.
How Was the Agreement Reached?
US President Donald Trump's tariffs imposed last summer dealt a heavy blow to Switzerland's export-dependent economy. After months of negotiations between officials, a significant breakthrough came through the intervention of a group of Swiss billionaires who visited Trump in the Oval Office and convinced him to lower tariffs in exchange for a $200 billion investment commitment from Swiss companies.
Before today's announcement, it was unclear whether the decision would be applied retroactively, as the Swiss government denied a report yesterday that the US had already agreed to retroactive application, affirming that “multiple scenarios” were under discussion.
Economic Reactions
Switzerland's business federation economiesuisse described the reduction as a “long-awaited relief,” noting that high tariffs posed an “existential threat” to some companies.
Luke Schnorrenberger, Deputy Head of Foreign Trade at the federation, stated in a comment to Bloomberg:
“Thanks to the agreement with the United States, thousands of jobs can be saved in Switzerland.”
Preliminary Agreement… Details Under Negotiation
Although the reduced tariffs will take effect retroactively, they remain contingent on the final outcomes of ongoing negotiations between the two countries. The US and Switzerland stated in a joint release that they aim to finalize the agreement by the first quarter of next year.
