Savvy Games Group, Saudi Arabia's principal gaming investment arm, is reportedly in advanced negotiations to acquire Moonton, the gaming subsidiary of ByteDance, the Chinese tech giant behind TikTok, in a deal valued at over $6 billion. According to international reports, both parties have reached a preliminary agreement on key terms, with the transaction likely to close within the current quarter pending final details and regulatory approvals. Bloomberg previously noted that ByteDance revived plans to sell Shanghai Moonton Technology in late 2025, after acquiring it in 2021 for nearly $4 billion.

Moonton is best known as the developer of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, one of the world’s most popular multiplayer mobile games, especially in Asia and emerging markets, and holds a prominent position in esports tournaments.

If finalized, the acquisition would further Saudi Arabia’s strategy - led by Savvy and the Public Investment Fund - to build an integrated gaming ecosystem, encompassing development, publishing, esports, and infrastructure. The move is part of a broader initiative to boost the digital economy’s contribution to GDP and diversify income sources away from oil.

Ownership of Moonton would provide Savvy with a major global mobile gaming asset, strengthening the Kingdom’s role as a key investor in a sector worth hundreds of billions of dollars annually, with mobile gaming showing particularly rapid growth.

The transaction comes as Chinese tech firms reassess their overseas assets amid regulatory changes and geopolitical pressures, opening opportunities for sovereign and global investors to acquire strategic digital assets.

EcoPulse24 Analysis:
Should the deal close above $6 billion, it would mark a significant leap in Saudi Arabia’s ambition to become a global gaming hub. Acquiring Moonton not only means owning a successful game, but also gaining a scalable development platform and a major brand with a vast, expanding fan base. The main challenge will be maintaining operational momentum and commercial growth in a fast-evolving, competitive environment. Nevertheless, integrating Moonton into Savvy’s portfolio could enhance Saudi Arabia’s position in global gaming value chains and support its economic diversification goals via a high-growth, exportable digital sector.
