The massive Stargate AI data center project in Abilene, Texas, has experienced a significant shift after expansion plans between Oracle and OpenAI were halted due to financial complications and changes in computing power requirements. Planned to be one of the largest AI data center projects in the US, the expansion aimed to boost operational capacity from 1.2 GW to around 2 GW equivalent to a nuclear reactor and enough to power about 750,000 homes simultaneously. Negotiations stalled after months of talks over funding and energy needs, leading to a 1.2% drop in Oracle shares to $152.96 on the NYSE, with related stocks like CoreWeave, Nvidia, and AMD also declining.
The AI infrastructure sector remains sensitive to such changes, given the multi-billion-dollar investments involved. While the Abilene expansion is paused, the core Oracle-OpenAI agreement for up to 4.5 GW of capacity is ongoing, with new sites, including one near Detroit, in development.

The development has allowed Meta to enter discussions with Crusoe, the project developer, about leasing the expansion site. Nvidia facilitated these talks, seeking to maintain its AI chip dominance at the center and provided a $150 million deposit to Crusoe. Meta is considering up to $135 billion in AI infrastructure investment by 2026 and is developing large data centers in Louisiana and Indiana, along with a recent deal for 6 GW of AMD-based computing infrastructure. Despite the current pause, Oracle and Crusoe confirm that the main site remains on track to become one of the world’s largest AI data centers. These developments highlight the complexities and massive investments required in AI infrastructure and the cross-industry cooperation necessary to meet growing computational demands.
