Swedish Krona Soars: Historic Gains Expected Through 2026

Stockholm – December 15, 2025 | EcoPulse24

The Swedish krona is on track to record one of its strongest years in decades, with expectations that this positive performance will extend into 2026, driven by noticeable economic recovery and a shift in the outlook for monetary policy in Sweden, according to estimates from global financial institutions.

The Swedish currency has gained over 20% against the US dollar during 2025, marking its best performance in more than twenty years, and has risen about 5% against the euro, its strongest rise since 2010. This performance has placed the krona at the forefront of the G10 currencies in terms of returns this year.

This improvement reflects a clear shift in the trajectory of the Swedish economy, following a period of pressures that brought the currency close to its historical lows against the euro at the beginning of this year, amid slowing growth and rising inflation. With the Swedish central bank sharply lowering interest rates over the past year, economic activity has begun to accelerate again, restoring confidence in the local currency.

Global banks, including Bank of America and JPMorgan, predict that the krona may continue its gains next year at a more moderate pace, with estimates suggesting it could rise to around 10.50 krona per euro by the end of 2026. Analysts believe that the stability of monetary policy at supportive levels, along with the potential for a return to tightening in late 2026, provides additional support for the currency.

Economic institutions expect the Swedish GDP to grow in 2026 at a rate nearly twice the EU average, after the economy recorded its fastest expansion rate in over two years in the third quarter of 2025. Additionally, ongoing fiscal stimulus and increased public spending, especially in an election year, enhance the attractiveness of Swedish assets to foreign investors.

In this context, the Swedish economy benefits from increased European defense spending, with local industrial companies, such as Saab, being among the primary beneficiaries of rearmament programs on the continent, which supports capital flows and boosts demand for the krona.

Analysts believe that while the Swedish currency has lower liquidity compared to other G10 currencies, it often benefits from periods of improved risk appetite in global markets, especially with expectations of US interest rate cuts next year, which may limit the strength of the dollar and support higher-yielding currencies.

Despite this optimism, some economists caution against excessive expectations for appreciation, noting that part of the future gains may already be priced into the markets. Nevertheless, the Swedish krona remains one of the European currencies garnering significant attention as 2026 approaches, amid increasing signs of sustainable economic recovery.
