The UK National Crime Agency (NCA) has revealed a major operation that dismantled a large criminal network involved in laundering over £1 billion through cryptocurrencies. A portion of these funds was channeled to support Russian interests, circumventing international sanctions and linking to activities associated with Russia’s war effort.

According to a CoinDesk report dated November 22, 2025, 'Operation Destabilise' spanned 28 cities and towns across the UK, resulting in 128 arrests and the seizure of over £25 million in cash and digital assets. Investigations found the network converted proceeds from drug trafficking, arms sales, and organized crime into cryptocurrency, which was then funneled to Russia via covert financial channels. The network was so entrenched that it operated its own private bank to facilitate illegal payments and complicate tracing.

Blockchain analytics played a crucial role in tracking these flows, with Chainalysis noting that the transparency of public ledgers makes cryptocurrencies a 'weak tool for money laundering' contrary to popular belief. Authorities reported that members of the network collected bags of 'dirty' money before quickly converting it into digital assets to obscure its origin.

They warned that these flows not only support crime in the UK but are also linked to 'geopolitical events causing suffering worldwide.' Russian national Ekaterina Zhdanova, described as a key financial conduit for Russian elites and cybercriminal groups, was arrested in France and is awaiting trial. UK Security Minister Dan Jarvis emphasized that the operation exposes the extent of Russia’s reliance on illicit financial networks, including crypto-based money laundering, to evade sanctions, stating: 'We will never allow these activities to take root on our streets.'
