Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) delivered an extensive presentation of its AI processor capabilities at CES 2026 in Las Vegas, unveiling new chips aimed at data centers and enterprises in a bid to strengthen its position in a market dominated by rival Nvidia.

During the keynote, CEO Lisa Su introduced the MI455 processors designed for artificial intelligence - key components for data center servers marketed to clients such as OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT. AMD also revealed the MI440X chip, an enterprise-focused version built for conventional infrastructures not specifically optimized for AI clusters, based on earlier chip generations intended for use in a forthcoming US supercomputer.

The event featured Greg Brockman, President of OpenAI, who emphasized the crucial role of chip design advancements in meeting the company’s growing computational needs, underscoring the strategic importance of its partnership with AMD.

Looking ahead, Lisa Su announced the future MI500 generation, stating it will deliver performance nearly 1,000 times greater than earlier iterations, with a launch targeted for 2027, according to the company.

While AMD remains a leading contender to Nvidia in the AI chip market, it still faces challenges in closing the gap with the industry leader, which continues to sell out its entire chip production, according to analysts. Nonetheless, AMD’s agreement with OpenAI last October has bolstered its standing, both in terms of potential revenue and technical credibility, as the first MI400-series chips begin rolling out this year.

Additionally, AMD hosted Daniele Pucci, CEO of Italy’s Generative Bionics, who unveiled the humanoid robot GENE.01, announcing that the company’s first commercial robot is set for production in the second half of 2026.
