Boeing finished 2025 ahead of Airbus in aircraft sales, putting an end to a seven-year streak of losses and reclaiming the top spot in the commercial aviation market for the first time since 2018. This marks a significant turnaround following a period of operational and institutional challenges.
The American company reported a total of 1,175 aircraft orders for the year, surpassing Airbus's 1,000 orders, according to data released sequentially by both companies. Boeing's total included its largest deal ever with Qatar Airways, announced during U.S. President Donald Trump's Middle East tour in May.
In terms of deliveries, Boeing supplied 600 aircraft during the year, including 63 in December, its highest monthly total in 2025. Although this figure was below Airbus's 793 deliveries, it represented Boeing's best annual performance since 2018.
This improvement reflects an acceleration in Boeing's production pace and a recovery in demand for its aircraft, aided by domestic political support and a better operating environment. This comes after years of disruptions that began with two 737 MAX crashes in 2019 and the subsequent global grounding of its most profitable model.
In December alone, Boeing registered 175 new orders against eight cancellations, highlighted by a 110-aircraft deal with Alaska Air Group - the largest order in the U.S. airline's history. Monthly orders also included 30 787 Dreamliners and five 777X jets.
For December deliveries, Boeing handed over 45 aircraft from the 737 family and 14 Dreamliners, indicating improved production capacity and supply chain stability.
Analysis
Boeing's return to sales leadership signals a strategic shift in the balance of power within the aviation industry. The company is reaping the benefits of restructuring and ramped-up production following years of regulatory and operational pressures. While Airbus remains ahead in deliveries, Boeing's strong order book points to renewed confidence in its aircraft and positions it competitively as the global aviation market enters a new expansion phase driven by fleet renewals worldwide.
