Danish toy giant Lego has officially entered the era of artificial intelligence with the launch of its revolutionary "Smart Brick" technology, making its debut at CES 2026. This move blends Lego’s traditional play heritage with advanced digital technologies to deliver an unprecedented interactive building experience for both children and hobbyists.
The Smart Brick is a standard-sized Lego piece embedded with a tiny 4.1mm ASIC chip. According to Lego, this chip allows each brick to respond differently based on the set being built and the manner of construction. With its proprietary "Play Engine" and integrated copper wiring, each smart brick can sense movement, orientation, magnetic fields, as well as its distance, direction, and location relative to other smart bricks.
Beyond sensing capabilities, Smart Bricks feature a built-in miniature speaker that plays audio clips dynamically tied to live play actions, meaning sounds adapt in real-time to how the brick is used in construction. This level of dynamic interaction transforms building from a passive activity into an immersive, responsive experience.
The smart pieces are accompanied by "Smart Tags" and "Smart Minifigures," each with their own special abilities, such as providing context to the smart bricks during play, according to tech site Engadget. All these smart components communicate via a local wireless layer Lego calls "BrickNet," enabling the bricks to determine their position relative to other smart elements and creating a fully interactive network within each set.
Analysts see Lego’s entry into AI and smart components as a natural evolution for a company that has repeatedly reinvented itself while maintaining its core identity. Since launching its classic bricks in the mid-20th century, Lego has expanded into digital games, movies, and robotics. However, this latest shift embeds technology directly into the bricks, rather than as an external add-on.
Lego has yet to announce pricing or commercial launch dates for Smart Brick sets, but their CES debut signals a wide-scale release planned for 2026. The key question now is whether these smart bricks will preserve the simple building magic beloved by generations, or introduce a new realm of creativity and interactivity that takes the Lego experience to an entirely new level. The answer will become clear as these products reach children and enthusiasts worldwide in the coming months.
