Nvidia has announced its intention to invest $1 billion over the next five years to create an AI-based pharmaceutical research lab in partnership with Eli Lilly. This initiative aims to accelerate one of the most complex and costly stages in drug manufacturing.

The new lab will be established in Silicon Valley, bringing Eli Lilly's laboratory expertise into the heart of technological innovation and enabling AI engineers to work closely with pharmaceutical research environments, according to Nvidia.

The project focuses on automating large portions of laboratory work, which currently relies heavily on human experimentation, by training computational models to operate equipment, manage research tasks, and analyze results. This is expected to speed up the drug compound discovery and validation cycle.

This move is part of Nvidia's diversification strategy for its technology applications, as the company seeks long-term growth opportunities in healthcare and pharmaceuticals, beyond its heavy reliance on a few major tech clients.

Kimberly Powell, Nvidia’s Vice President for Healthcare, stated that “the human element is the primary bottleneck in laboratory speed,” and integrating AI could fundamentally alleviate this constraint.

In parallel with the lab, Nvidia is expanding its development of custom AI models and agents for the healthcare sector and making them open-source. The company is also collaborating with Thermo Fisher Scientific to connect lab equipment to DGX Spark computers, and with Multiply Labs to train robots for scientific research procedures.

This partnership builds on a previous collaboration announced last October to develop the most powerful supercomputer owned and operated by a pharmaceutical company, set to be fully operational in the first quarter of this year at Eli Lilly’s headquarters in Indianapolis.
