Inflation in Jordan recorded a notable slowdown in January 2025, signaling a moderation in price pressures compared to recent months and reflecting gradual shifts in demand dynamics and living costs. Official data revealed that the annual pace of price increases narrowed, supported by declines in some key food staples, though upward pressure persisted in other daily consumption categories.

Annual inflation stood at 1.06% in January 2025, down from 1.31% in December, reaching its lowest rate since October 2024. This annual decline indicates a relative easing of inflationary momentum, though not a complete disappearance of price pressures, which have instead shifted among different sectors within the consumer basket.

Among inflation components, the sharpest increase was seen in personal items, which surged by 38.9%, constituting a major upward driver for the overall index. Prices for oils and fats rose by 13.45%, reflecting ongoing sensitivity to cost fluctuations and supply chain issues. Tea, coffee, and cocoa prices increased by 12.02%, while fruit and nuts were up 4.23%, and tobacco and cigarettes rose by 3.99%.

Conversely, several categories helped curb inflation, most notably a 9.8% drop in meat and poultry prices, easing household spending pressures given this category's substantial weight in food expenses. Vegetable, dried, and canned legume prices fell by 6.27%, and household goods declined by 3.28%, partially offsetting sharper increases elsewhere.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.17% in January, compared to a 0.68% increase in December - the fastest monthly rise since June 2022. This slower monthly pace reinforces the picture of a gradual easing in short-term inflationary pressures and suggests relative price stability at the start of the year.

Jordan's overall inflation picture is mixed: while headline rates are slowing, some goods and services - especially non-food and imported items - continue to see strong increases. This divergence reflects differing supply and demand trends across sectors, as well as external factors affecting import costs.

EcoPulse24 Analysis:
The slowdown in inflation to this level signals a lessening of aggregate price pressures, a positive development for economic stability and consumer confidence. However, the underlying inflation structure shows the challenge is ongoing, as sharp increases in specific categories mean many households still feel the impact. Economically, this environment gives policymakers greater flexibility, but also requires close monitoring of price pressures across the basket to ensure that stability is sustained and not merely a short-term effect.
