President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the United States will begin guiding neutral ships trapped in the Persian Gulf out through the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday, in an initiative he dubbed "Project Freedom" - the most direct American intervention yet in the maritime crisis triggered by the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.

Trump made the announcement via social media, saying several countries had asked the US for help freeing their vessels, whose crews he described as running out of food and other necessities after weeks of being stranded in the Gulf.

What Trump Said

"The ship movement is merely meant to free up people, companies, and countries that have done absolutely nothing wrong - they are victims of circumstance," Trump wrote. "If, in any way, this humanitarian process is interfered with, that interference will, unfortunately, have to be dealt with forcefully."

Trump did not elaborate on the specific steps the US would take beyond the social media post. US Central Command followed with an official statement confirming military support for the operation.

The Military Dimension

Admiral Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command, confirmed in an official statement that the US would provide military support to restore commercial shipping through Hormuz, including the use of guided-missile destroyers, aircraft, and drones. "Our support for this defensive mission is essential to regional security and the global economy as we also maintain the naval blockade," Cooper said.

However, the Wall Street Journal, citing an unnamed US official, reported that the operation does not currently involve direct US Navy escorts - describing it instead as a coordination process involving countries, insurance companies, and shipping organizations.

Iran Pushes Back

Tehran responded swiftly. Al Mayadeen, citing Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Iranian parliament's National Security Commission, reported a warning that any US interference in the Strait of Hormuz would constitute a violation of the ceasefire. "The management of the strait and the gulf won't be dictated by Trump's delusional posts," Azizi was cited as saying.

Iran is simultaneously reviewing the US response to its recent 14-point peace proposal, according to Iranian state television citing a foreign ministry spokesman. Trump said US representatives are having "very positive discussions" with Iran that could lead to something "very positive for all," without offering additional details.

Markets React With Skepticism - and a Tanker Is Hit

Oil markets greeted the announcement with caution. Brent crude fell as much as 2.4% at the open before steadying near $108 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate traded below $102 - reflecting trader doubt about the effectiveness and enforceability of Trump's plan.

In a development that underscored the continued danger in the waterway, UK Maritime Trade Operations reported that a tanker was struck by projectiles 78 nautical miles north of Fujairah in the UAE. The vessel was not identified, though the crew were reported safe.

The Broader Stakes

Hundreds of tankers, bulk carriers, and cargo ships remain stranded in the Gulf. Countries in the region have curtailed significant oil production as storage capacity has reached its limits. The Strait of Hormuz - through which approximately one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas normally flows - remains the fulcrum of the crisis.

The economic pressure on Washington is mounting. Rising gasoline prices driven by the Hormuz blockage have stirred concerns in the White House that Republicans could suffer a significant defeat in November's midterm elections. Project Freedom, whatever its operational limitations, is as much a domestic political signal as it is a maritime strategy.

The ceasefire between the US and Iran remains formally in place. But with a tanker struck, Iranian lawmakers issuing warnings, and American military assets now actively involved in Hormuz navigation, the margin for miscalculation is narrowing.
