According to Bloomberg, the new US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, affirmed that the United States and India can overcome their differences, including a long-delayed trade agreement. He emphasized that the partnership between the two nations remains solid despite ongoing disagreements. Officials from both sides are scheduled to hold a formal call on Tuesday to discuss the stalled agreement.

In his inaugural address at the US Embassy in New Delhi, Gor noted that India was among the first countries considered for a trade deal with Washington last year. However, unresolved issues have prevented its completion. He added that ongoing communication reflects a mutual desire to reach a final agreement, but the size and complexity of India's economy mean that achieving a comprehensive deal will take time.

These developments come amid a cooling of bilateral relations during former President Donald Trump's second term, largely due to high US tariffs - some as steep as 50% - imposed on India, as well as tensions over energy and regional affairs. India remains one of the few major economies without a trade agreement with the US, despite months of negotiations.

On a parallel track, Gor announced that Washington will extend an official invitation for India to become a full member of the 'Pax Silica' initiative next month. This US-led effort aims to build a secure and prosperous supply chain for silicon and semiconductors, including countries such as Japan, South Korea, the UK, and Israel. The initiative seeks to integrate critical minerals, energy inputs, advanced chip manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and logistics.

Gor stressed that the US-India relationship is built on high-level engagement and expressed his intent to deepen bilateral cooperation in trade, technology, and supply chains to advance shared strategic interests.

Analysis:
Recent moves indicate a pragmatic reset in US-India relations, with technological supply chain and industrial security considerations taking priority over short-term trade disputes. India's potential entry into 'Pax Silica' would give New Delhi a pivotal role in the global semiconductor ecosystem and provide Washington with a broad-based industrial partner. However, the success of the trade agreement hinges on both sides' ability to resolve contentious issues without further tariff escalation, which will determine whether the relationship moves toward gradual settlement or remains in a fragile balance shaped by geopolitical necessities.
